 | 23rd Jan 2010 | Railfreight
This gallery depicts freight trains across the Irish Rail network.
Unfortunately in recent years several traffic flows have ceased, the only new working being the IWT liner from Dublin to Ballina.
|
 | 22nd Jan 2010 | The Tara`a - Lead & Zinc Ore from Tara Mine
Tara Mine is the largest zinc mine in Europe and the fifth largest in the world producing 200,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 40,000 tonnes of lead concentrate annually.
This gallery shows the traffic from the mines to Dublin`s Alexandre Road mineral terminal where the zinc and lead is transferred to ship for export.
|
 | 21st Jan 2010 | Sligo Timber
The twice weekly timber trains from Sligo to Waterford ceased running in December 2008.
This was the end of freight traffic on the Sligo line.
|
 | 20th Jan 2010 | Kilmastulla-Limerick Shale traffic
Limerick Cement works used to receive up to three train loads of shale a day from Kilmastulla quarry near Birdhill.
These trains ceased to run in December 2009 along with the cement traffic from Limerick to Waterford.
|
 | 19th Jan 2010 | Weed Spray Train
One of the most illusive trains on Irish Rail.
These are my only pictures of the weed spray train...
|
 | 18th Jan 2010 | Farewell to the Ballina Cravens...
At the end of 2006 the loco hauled train from Manulla Jct to Ballina went over to unit operation.
Not only was this the end of another loco hauled service but also the end of Cravens coaches and steam heat on Irish Rail.
I made one final trip along the branch on a real train with a proper loco.
|
 | 17th Jan 2010 | Mark 3 Farewell Railtour
Dec 8 2008 saw Ian Walsh run The Mk lll Farewell railtour from Limerick-Limerick via Waterford, Wellington Bridge, Waterford, Kildare and Limerick Jct.
An 071 was expected to haul the train so it was a bonus when 142 & 144 were allocated to the train.
I bailed out at Kildare for a €40 taxi ride to one of my favourite locations, the bridge across the River Barrow at Monasterevan.
The taxi waited whilst I took my shot then took me on to Portarlington where I caught a regular service train back to Limerick.
|
 | 16th Jan 2010 | Push pull
This gallery shows all variants driving brake generator vans...
|
 | 15th Jan 2010 | Coaching Stock
A selection of photos of various different types of coaching stock...
|
 | 14th Jan 2010 | Wagons, Carts and Darts...
These are the pictures taken of units in full sun whilst waiting for a real train to appear.
However, when the real train arrives the sun has usually gone behind a cloud!
These are pictures of the `Carts before the storm`...
|
 | 13th Jan 2010 | Inchicore Works visit
Photos from an official works visit this summer...
|
 | 12th Jan 2010 | Closed Stations, Signal Boxes, Disused Lines etc...
There are many closed lines and stations in Ireland.
As there are now less `real` trains there is more time to explore these interesting locations from the past.
|

 | 1st Jan 2010 | Bord Na Mona Bog Railway
When the Sligo logs didn`t run and no other 071 action it was time to formulate a `Plan B`.
What we came up with was Edenderry Power Station and the narrow guage bog railway that serves it.
I`ve absolutely no idea what`s what so any info on the pics is appreciated...
